    From what I read there has been a lot of confusion on how this extractor works, so I’m writing this to share some of my thoughts since the manual is only good for starting a fire. I’m writing in response to oil changes only and nothing else.

    First, the Mityvac isn’t as mighty as the title suggest. The suction even with 100 psi isn’t as mind blowing as you may think, thus there are great benefits from warming up the engine oil for a good 10-15 minutes before starting. There are reviews claiming this thing stopped sucking and their mistake may be related to not heating up the oil.

    Second, for those complaining about the length of tubing (and went out and bought longer lengths) you might want to try taking the largest tubing and combining it with one of the smaller tubes. Note: this method is shown on the box (not in the manual) and will degrade the suction slightly, but if you followed my first advise there is nothing to worry about. From my experiences using (brand new) “cool” full synthetic oil, you may have some success “slowly” extracting the oil with one section of tubing, but you can forget using two combined sections. Just warm the oil up and avoid the hassle.

    Third, for those who don’t know if you have the tubing all the way in the oil pan through the dip stick tube: some suggestions. Take the tubing all the way out and see if there is any oil on the end. Note how long of a section of tubing you removed and compare it to your dip stick. This should be a good indication how far you need to go. Note: don’t do what I have and shove the tubing in as hard as possible and kink the end of the tube, in other words “use good judgement”.

    More Suggestions: The tubing gets oil inside that is virtually impossible to clean after you are done. I went out and bought a small plastic tote for storage just for this reason. I store my oil funnel, rubber gloves, etc. etc. for the sake of not getting oil all over the garage. You might want to consider buying one. Also, don’t forget to remove the oil filler cap when extracting since this will help with the displacement of air into the engine.

    I bought this Mityvac 7300 because I usually get sick when I crawl under my cars to change the oil. Since my 2007 Huyndai Santa Fe has the oil filter on top of the engine I figured I was all set. I have a Nissan Frontier as well and that filter is accessible only from below unfortunately. Perhaps limited time under one vehicle only will let me escape without getting sick, I hoped.

    The Mityvac’s directions are not clear. The parts described in the verbiage are not pictured nor are they intuitive. You do not know what they are. For instance the instructions say to shut off a valve to build a vaccum in the unit, disconnect the air compressor and use the Mityvac in some remote location away from the air source. Great news, except the valve is neither described nor is it provided. For the life of me I cannot figure out how to make that feature work, but that was ok since I used the Mityvac where the air compressor was located.

    Before my first use I bought a 25 foot coil of 1/4″ plastic tubeing (which was intended for refrigerator ice maker hook up) at Home Depot as a previous reviewer suggested. The provided tubing is too short. I used about 12 foot of tubing. It worked beautifully, but you must insure that you have the tube all the way down to the bottom of the oil pan. I did not at first and did not fully evacuate the Santa Fe.

    After evacuating the Santa Fe I turned to my Nissan Frontier and prepared to change its oil as well. That is when I ran into problems since I had not emptied the Mityvac before using it on the Frontier.

    DO NOT COUNT ON THE OVERFLOW SHUTOFF TO WORK! I did and mine did not. Soon oil was all over the floor. Of course if a person is attentive and watches what is happening this would not happen. It remains to be seen if any injury occurred to the venture part when the oil got sucked down into it.

    To clean the unit when I was done I used hot water with dish washing detergent. It worked well enough.

    All in all I am pleased that I bought the Mityvac 7300. Except for the overflow protection failure, it worked quite well. I would not suggest changing oil wearing a tuxedo as some have implied could be done, however, unless you are into destroying tuxes. It simply is not THAT clean a procedure.

    I have 3 cars, a jeep, a Volvo and a VW Passat so sometimes it seems like I am running my own little oil change shop. Anything that makes things easier is much appreciated. The Volvo and the VW have belly pans that have to be removed to do a regular drain plug oil change which is a real pain but both also have oil filters accessible from up top. So the MityVac makes oil changes tons easier on these cars. No need to get on the ground at all. If you have a car that fit this description one of the MityVac fluid extractors is must. It takes oil changes and moves them from being a Saturday morning project to something you can just whip off while waiting for dinner to be ready. No ramps, no messing with the belly pan, no changing into something you don’t mind laying on the garage floor in, no laying in slush in January, etc. (On the other hand, the Jeep filter change requires getting on the ground anyway and there is no belly pan to remove so while the MityVac does work on the Jeep, I’m going to stick with the Fumoto valve technique there since I’m under the car anyway and the valve plus some tubing puts the oil directly into my disposal container a/k/a empty milk jug. If your car requires getting on your back anyway to change the filter I suggest looking into the Fumoto valve).

    It takes about 15 minutes to suck 6 qts of oil out. That’s probably about the same as it would take to drain but it does result in time savings since you can get started in less than a minute then go gather up what you need to do the filter change and start on the preliminaries while it sucks away. Really, it is the convenience rather than outright time savings that makes this thing worthwhile. Added bonus – my lawn mower and power washer (both of which lack drain plugs) are now going to get more regular oil changes and I’m looking forward to using it to do a power steering fluid change, my next differential fluid change on the jeep and to bleed my brakes (it comes with a bleeder attachment). Well worth the price.

    At least on my cars, it pulls out as much oil as draining does (note, if you start off a quart or 2 low, it will not magically manufacture oil for you so the test is not how much it sucks out but how much you have to put back in). I have a 26 gallon compressor and it can do a whole change only cycling on once near the end. I use 100 psi. It was actually quite a bit quieter than I thought it would be. There is a plug in the top that pulls out to reveal a nice pour hole with a little spout for pouring the oil into a disposal container. The tubing is just long enough to do my cars which means its not long enough to do a truck without putting the MityVac up on something. But, the tubing is just generic poly tubing and there are no fittings so it should be easy to make longer tubing. I haven’t tried it but there is a picture on the box of 2 of the included pieces of tubing connected together and it does look like the largest size might fit into the plug connectors on the ends of the other two pieces. (It is true the instructions are worthless. Don’t even bother reading them).
