drawbars fall a little short, May 16, 2011

I was able to buy this for a lot less than $499.00 as a “scratch or dent” item. The thing that got my attention was, in addition to all the other sounds and features, it has a “drawbar organ” section. The “drawbars” are sliders, but they act just like drawbars. It also has 2nd and 3rd harmonic percussion, and a rotary speaker (Leslie) sim. It doesn’t have 6 degrees of vibrato and vibrato chorus, but it does have vibrato. I thought it was too good to be true that I could get a full featured drawbar organ for that price. I had to smile when I started to play with the drawbars. They do not have 8 separate loudnesses for each drawbar. So yes, you are limited to how many combinations you can create. It does have 2nd and 3rd harmonic percussion and a rotary speaker sim. The Leslie sim is weak compared to other units, but when you consider the price, it’s hard to complain. Just a little “buyer beware”, if a prospective buyer is expecting to get full drawbar capability. And considering the entire package for the price, it’s still a good buy. Since I don’t need absolute perfection in the drawbar capability, I find the limitations to be a apart of the charm of such an inexpensive keyboard. No other manufacturer offers ANY drawbar capability at this price. It doesn’t have 88 keys, but with 76, it also is a very capable piano. So considering all the sounds, the drawbar organ, the sound editing, the sequencer, the audio recording, 76 keys, and its light weight, it’s got more bang for the buck than ANY other keyboard I know of.

Casio has outdone themselves with this board!!! This board is capable of some serious music. I’m a guy who has been making music on keyboards, synths, and computers since the late 70′s and have owned and used some expensive professional boards (Yamaha,Roland,Korg,Kurzweil etc.) If you tweak the sounds on this board using the onboard DSP you can get some amazing sounds the drawbars and audio recording is just whipped cream on the cake. GET IT, YOU WON’T REGRET IT

Nice keyboard, with one FATAL flaw, June 14, 2011

Let me preface my remarks by saying that I own a Casio (Privia) PX-330 keyboard, and absolutely LOVE it! It has been my main gigging keyboard for over a year now, and continues to impress me with all its functionality. When I read about the WK-7500, I thought it would be the perfect 2nd keyboard, when the gig can’t be handled by one keyboard.

I love the sounds, the layout of the front panel, the large LCD, ALMOST everything about this keyboard is killer. However, as soon as I laid my hands on the keybed, I knew something wasn’t right. Sure enough, the keys (both black and white) are SHORTER than a standard keyboard. I even grabbed a measuring tape, and measured against both my piano and a controller in my studio. Yep, they’re almost 1/2″ shorter.

Maybe to a lot of people that doesn’t make any difference, but for somebody who has played all their life, it was quite disconcerting. The two areas most affected are 1) the “free” amount of white key space (the length of white key not sandwiched between the black keys) and 2) the decrease in the depth of the key bed. Because it’s a shorter keyboard, there’s less distance for the key to travel before it hits the “bed”. And I realized after playing for awhile, this is what was tiring my fingers and forearms out so much! My fingers are instinctively used to traveling about an extra 1/4″ before each key stops. So they want to keep pushing; however, I’ve already hit the bottom of the keyboard. Very frustrating and (after awhile) quite painful!

Let me say I really, really wanted to like this keyboard. I really did. It’s less than 20 lbs., and I was looking forward to taking it on vacation and playing/composing, etc. And as I said earlier, maybe it won’t make a difference to 90% of people. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work for me. After about 45 minutes of playing, my hands and arms are much more tired than they are playing a “full size” keyboard.

Hope this helps. If you can get around this difference, it’s an outstanding keyboard! Best of luck!

    Tom
